Chaves, Dale C.
Dale C. Chaves, 60, died
last week of a heart attack at his home in downtown Albuquerque. A journalist and
marketing professional for 34 years, Dale spent two stints
in the 1990s at the
Albuquerque Journal, first as a copy editor and later as a
business writer. He
then formed his own communications and marketing firm,
Chaney Associates. He designed
and implemented marketing, research and industrial
communications projects for Intel Corp., Technology Ventures Corp.,
Charles Stephen Co. andNew Mexico Bank Trust, among other companies. In
recent years, Dale pursued several new product development ventures using
integrated technology, including innovative iPhone apps,
with his long time
business partner and friend Alan Hoving. In his long
career as a writer, reporter
and editor in both Chicago and Albuquerque, he covered
manufacturing and financial
services industries and won multiple Jesse E. Neal Awards
in the 1970s for outstanding
trade journalism. He edited psychologist Lynn Weiss's work
on attention deficit
disorder, and had books on home inspection and real estate
brokerage published by
Contemporary Books of Chicago. Seven years ago, Dale
changed his birth surname from Chaney to Chaves in order to reclaim his
family's original last name. His father had adopted the Chaney name before
Dale's birth. As a result, many Albuquerque business associates and journalistic
colleagues knew Dale as Dale Chaney. A native of Durango,
Colo., Dale joined the
U.S. Army in 1968 and served two tours of duty in the
Vietnam War as a
supply sergeant. He graduated summa cum laudein history
from Fort Lewis College in Durango in 1973. He traveled to Rock
Springs, WY.,where he took a job mining trona, the raw form of soda ash, to earn
money for graduate school. He received his Master of Science in journalism from
Northwestern University in 1976. After a post-graduate fellowship in the communications
office of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, he married Mary Beth
Libbey of Antioch, Calif., in 1977. The couple lived and worked as business journalists in
Chicago for 10 years, educating themselves about jazz in the city's nightclubs and
learning about the world's cusine without ever leaving the
city. Dale loved ball
games at Wrigley Field, walking his Rottweiler, Dexter, on
the shores of Lake
Michigan and transforming a rundown 1920s frame house in
west Lakewood into a showcase
of urban pioneer handiwork, complete with oak floors and
baseboards and a fully
restored kitchen. He did all the carpentry himself. Mary
Beth and Dale moved to Albuquerque
in 1986, and their daughter Frances Libbey Chaves was born
in 1988. The couple
remained married another 22years and then divorced in
1988. Dale was an avid backpacker,
hiker and cyclist who enjoyed traveling with his family.
They took trips to Italy to explore Rome, Pisa and Cinque Terre; to
Vancouver Island for kayaking; to Cozumel, Mexico, for scuba diving; and to the
East and West coasts for beach vacations. He was a voracious reader with an immense
range of interests: philosophy, theology, literature, history, politics and science. His
writing pursuits were equally broad. In addition to journalistic and business writing,
he wrote fiction and poetry. His near-constant canine companions throughout the years
included Dexter, Jake, Hank and Buddy. His accomplishments outside of the
working world included renovating three homes, landscaping a home in Corrales, and
analyzing and trading stocks. Over the years he became a gourmet cook, much to the
delight of his family and friends who were invited to share his talent and his table. Dale
was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and Adolph Chaney; and several aunts and
uncles who were the adopted brothers and sisters of Dale's father: Elsie and Connie
Armijo of Albuquerque, and RayArmijoof Santa Fe. He was also preceded in death by his
uncle, Henry Martinez of Denver; and his closest lifelong friend, Stanley Romero of
Santa Ana, Calif. Dale is survived by his daughter, Frances Chaves, of Albuquerque;
three sisters, Eileen Gant and Carol LaVarta of Lamar, Colo, and Bobbie Mclain of West
Plains, MO, and their families;and his former wife, Mary Beth Libbey of Albuquerque.
Survivors also include several aunts and uncles: Frank Armijo of Taos, Justin Armijo of
Santa Fe, Elmer Armijo of Pena Blanca, Zelma Armijo of Pennsylvania, and Joan Goodman,
Lillian Prichard, and Dolores Armijo, all of Albuquerque. Not to mention many
dear friends, including Wayne Aragon and Richard Draper, who will tell you he touched
the lives of everyone he met. Services will be held at noon Thursday at St. Michael and All
Angels Episcopal Church, 601 Montano Rd. NW. In lieu of flowers, donations can be
sent in Dale's name to either the library or the academic
program in history c⁄o

Colbert, Elizabeth
Elizabeth "Betty"
Colbert, nee Chapman, Renowned New Mexican potter, died September 12, 2009. Born in
Columbus, Ohio to Harold Patterson Chapman and Marion Moore Chapman in 1925, the artist
came to the state to pursue a studio arts degree at the University of New Mexico. In 1948,
Ms. Colbert was a student resident at the Harwood Foundation, studying with all the
great artists then living in Taos. Married later the same
year, she and her husband
Al (deceased 1966) built a house in Corrales. After many years in Corrales, the artist moved
first to Algodones and then Albuquerque before retiring to Regina. It was thanks to her last
husband, Charles Groffman (deceased 2008) that she discovered the peace and beauty of
Regina. Betty Colbert started potting in graduate school at U.N.M. and completed her
studies at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel, Mexico. In the '60's, Ms. Colbert worked
with Fortino-Guerrero, a master wheel potter in Hidalgo and Gonzalo Garcia at Artisono
Tallaveria in Guanajuato. She went on to study with many other famous American potters. A
studio potter and muralist, Ms. Colbert also taught at the University of Albuquerque for
nearly two decades, as well as leading many seminars and workshops at Ghost Ranch. She
operated her own gallery both at the Sheraton Mercado and in Algodones. She juried
numerous shows, and set standards as an influential voice and founding
member of the State of New Mexico Arts Commission, the New Mexico Potters Association, the
New Mexico Arts and Crafts Fair, and as a frequent judge at the New Mexico State Fair.
She worked with the Santa Fe Opera on a benefit series of fashion shows. Her work
consistently won prizes and was much sought after by collectors. Ms. Colbert's pots are
part of permanent collections at the Albuquerque, Arizona State University and
Brooklyn art museums and she was commissioned for installations at the Albuquerque
Federal Courthouse, Boys Academy and Christian Reform church. Her work was
recognized in many publications ranging from local and regional newspapers, magazines such
as New Mexico, New Mexico Architect, Craft Horizons and Ceramics Monthly,
textbooks and the Who's Who of American Women. In 1964, she was selected by the state
chapter of the American Interior Designers to do all of the pottery for the New Mexican Room
at the "Pavilion of American Interiors" of the Worlds Fair in New York. This was in
conjunction with her successful business creating hanging stoneware lights. Subsequent
to an interview Ms. Colbert conducted with the architect Frank Lloyd Wright, he
asked her to create some lamps for a house he was designing in Oklahoma. Ms. Colbert
worked as a radio journalist and on-air interviewer for such famous visitors to Albuquerque
as Wright, Adlai Stevenson and Eleanor Roosevelt. She also co-chaired the Sandoval
County Democratic Party from 1960 to 1967, served on the State Central Committee of the
Democratic Party from 1962 to 1967 and remained involved in politics all of her
life. She is survived by her two daughters, Annette
Colbert and Cecily

Cordova, Pablo Alexander
Pablo Alexander. Born
July 7, 1942 died April 1, 2009. Pablo passed away at the
VA Medical Center,
Albuquerque on April 1, 2009. Pablo graduated from Penasco
High School in 1961.
Known by his friends by many names, "Bebo" found joy and
comic relief in the
deprivations of every day life. His classic image of "una
gallina en shortes" survives to this day. Pablo's best friends Gilbert
Sanchez, Atilano Dominquez, the late Roger Duran, Dennis Pacheco, Ernesto Lopez, the
late Paul Lopez, and others were highly thought of by Pablo. Pablo was preceeded in
death by his father, Tomas Aquino Cordova born in 1898 in Vadito, who died in 1957
working for the Army at the Army Depot in Pueblo, Colorado; leaving seven children
behind. Tomas Cordova attended the Indian School at Ft Lewis as a child and went until
the 6th grade at the Presbyterian Day School in Penasco in the early 1900's. Tomas
Cordova served as Taos County Commissioner and Penasco School Board. Pablo was
named after his grandfather, Pablo Antonio Cordova born in 1844-1934 (a self educated
lawyer and magistrate). Pablo's mother, Maria Tafoya Cordova born in 1914 and died in
1980, was one of first graduates of Penasco High School and worked at the State
Capitol under Governor Simms administration. Pablo is survived by his daughter, Alexis
Cordova granddaughter, Arianna his siblings: Samuel
Romero (retired from US
Post Office), Barolin Romero (retired from Los Alamos
Labs) and wife
Frances, Tom Cordova (retired from Sandia Labs) and wife
Lydia, Marie Dorothy Martinez,
Marian Elizabeth Smith (retired from the State of
NM) husband Jerry Smith, Alberto Cordova (retired Chaplain (Lieutenant
Colonel) US Army, Agnes Mildred Cordova, James Michael Cordova (retired
from Sandia labs). As a child, Pablo became a member of Emmanuel Presbyterian
Church in Penasco shortly after his father, Tomas Cordova joined in 1957. Pablo
enlisted in the US Navy in 1961 serving as a Boiler Tender
and Damage Control man on
the USS Galveston; USS Howard D. Crow the USS Sellers. Serving over eight years in
the Navy, Pablo made Petty Officer 1st Class (E 6). Pablo serving in Vietnam, the
Carribbean, the Mediterranean, and the Pacific sailed around the world stopping in Spain,
Mallorca, Acapulco, Hong Kong, the Philippines and many other places. Pablo received
many decorations among them: the Good Conduct Medal; the sea service ribbon with
four stars, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Expeditionary Medal, the National
Defense Medal; and many others. Pablo is an original plank holder for the guided missile
destroyer, the USS Sellers. Pablo gave many years as assistant manager of the VFW on
Washington and Lomas. Many veterans at the VFW were uplifted by Pablo's wonderful
humor and stories. Pablo never forgot his best friend, Paul Lopez, who died while preparing
for his graduation from Penasco High School. Pablo served his country well reaching the
highest enlisted rank of all his brothers and uncles. Pablo was known as a "picaro" who
found something funny in the everyday lives of people. As a little boy, few people
walking down the street escaped his notice and his naming as he called to them by their
new name like: Rex Allen, Evardo en tennis, or to Santiagito (yo soy mas grande que
tu). Pablo is truly one of a kind, "de una fina estampa",
not unlike the figure of
Don Quixote by Miguel De Cervantes. Ride on "mi capitan."
Ride on to golden sky.
Pablo's favorite music was: Johnny Cash, "Cry, Cry,
Cry" others, Duane
Eddy Lee Hazelwood, Jimmy Driftwood, Johnny Horton,
"The Battle of New Orleans",
Roy Orbison, "Only the Lonely", and many others too many
to name. Pablo favorite
movies were: The Three Stooges, The Little Rascals, Laurel
and Hardy and many others.
Pablo's social critique included the unnecessary wars by
President Johnson and President
Bush. Pablo's favorite movie was "Carousel" with the song,
"You will never walk alone."
Pablo's favorite teacher was Mr. Gilbert Garduno because
he liked the way he moved
when he stood still. Pablo always wanted to go back to his
mother's house. Now Pablo
is home with all who have gone before and waits for the
rest of us to join him. Pablo was a decent man who tried to do the right
thing in everything he did. As the song goes, "Walk on with hope in your heart and
you will never walk alone", walk on Pablo. Friends and family are invited to The
Clubhouse, 1315 Menaul NE, Sunday, April 5, 2009 at 6 p.m. ABQ Journal April 05,
