Fields, Walter Allen Jr.
Walter Allen Fields Jr.,
"Rexy,"- Teen found hanged at Fred Baca Park By Jonathan McDonald, The Taos News, August 12,
1999 The body of a 17-year-old man from the Peñasco area was found hanging from
a tree Friday, Aug. 6, 1999, in Fred Baca Park. The body of Walter Fields was
discovered at approximately 8:45 a.m. by a groundskeeper, according to Police
Chief Neil Curran. The groundskeeper was there to pick up trash and ensure the nearby
playground was clean for children. No children saw Fields' body, and police were called
to the scene at once. Fields' death has been classified by police as a "homicide slash
suicide," said Curran, who added that the evidence on the
scene was "almost zilch."
A leather belt was used to hang Fields from the tree, and
Curran said there was
no sign of a struggle or evidence of foul play. "There
were no tracks on the ground
... and no abrasions on the body," he said. However,
investigators are "keeping an open mind" about what might have happened,
the chief said. The Office of the Medical Investigator was called to determine
the cause of death, and police are waiting to hear from them before officially calling
the death a suicide or a homicide. "They can sometimes look very similar, though at this
point there is nothing to indicate a homicide," Curran
said. Police had
identified Walters, who did not have any identification on
him, within five hours of
finding the body. Curran said they got help from a number
of sources in identifying the man. Assuming Fields did commit suicide,
there is no indication what drove him to the act. He was a ward of the state Children,
Youth and Families Department, Curran said, and living on his own. Fields was
involved in a traffic accident near the entrance to Taos Pueblo several weeks ago and damaged
a truck he had borrowed from a friend. Other than that, there is very little to
indicate why Fields may have killed himself. Curran said
the death of Fields
was "a shame" and wished something could have been done.
"There has been a
large increase in juvenile suicide nationwide." The Office
of the Medical Investigator
had no information for release as of press time Tuesday
(Aug. 10). (In The Taos
News, August 8, 2001 there is an open letter from his
mother to her son. It states that he was born 10 August 1981. It also
stated that his grandfather, Ralph Martinez and his great-grandfather Frank Martinez
passed before him.)
