Gallegos, Feliberto
Feliberto Gallegos, 91,
died after a short illness on Saturday, March 3, 2007 in Albuquerque. He was born March 10,
1916 the son of Eliseo Manuel and Petria Gonzales Gallegos in Roy, New Mexico.
Feliberto went on to live a very fruitful life. From life
on the family ranch in
De Haven, New Mexico to school in Raton and work at the
Highway Department in
Springer. He was always up to a challenge to the point of
being one of the first
from northern New Mexico to obtain his pilots license.
When World War II broke out, Feliberto enlisted in the Navy and was
assigned to a submarine tender stationed out of New York. He took a brief hiatus
from service to marry the love of his life for 62 years, Lucille Ortiz, who joined him in New
York. His life from this point on included his honorable discharge from the service and the
beginning of business adventures that continued up to and until his death. Feliberto
returned to New Mexico after the war and in the 50's,
opened a timber mill
operation in Taos, NM. The operation expanded to
Albuquerque with the opening
of O.K. Lumber Inc. later to become ABC Lumber
Hardware and then Paint Pot of NM. Feliberto, along with his wife and
business partner, for a short period also owned the Embassy Nightclub in Tijeras
Canyon and would bring in acts from Hollywood to perform. The family business changed
with the times and from lumber and hardware it also included rental and commercial
property acquisitions many of which are still active today. Feliberto returned to work
for the State Department of Human Services in the 80's and eventually semi-retired
remaining active in the family business. During this time
Feliberto and his wife
raised four children and made many friends. Theirs was the
kind of marriage
people aspire to; inseparable best friends who enjoyed
each other's company, entirely
devoted to each other and their children and
grandchildren. Feliberto was also very active in politics, community service
and the church. His speaking skills were exceptional and served him well in
all of his endeavors. He augmented those skills with a very active participation in
Toastmasters of NM. Though health problems plagued him for
many of his last years,
Feliberto remained a focused and dynamic individual who continued to move forward in spite
of the obstacles placed before him. Feliberto was preceded in death by his daughter,
Olivia Juarez. He is survived by his loving wife Lucille;
daughter, Yolanda
Sanchez; sons, Phillip Gallegos, and Anthony Gallegos and
wife Barbara;
grandchildren, Michael Sanchez, Joshua, David, Ashley and

Galles, Herbert Lee Jr.
, 95, passed away March
19, 2007. A lifetime resident of Albuquerque, Mr. Galles
was preceded in death
by his loving wife of almost 70 years, Fern. He is
survived by his children,
Lee Galles, of Albuquerque, Judi Friday and husband Larry,
of Taos, NM, Rick Galles
and wife Tina of Albuquerque and Karen Mische and husband
Lynd, of Overland Park,
KS. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren. At the time of his passing, Mr. Galles was Chairman of
the Board of Galles Motor company, in business since 1908. In 1959, he was
named President of the National Automobile Dealers Association, and was
originator and Chairman of the Dealer Election Action Committee and was inducted into the
U.S. Automotive Hall of Fame. He was instrumental in the creation of the "Monroney"
sticker law for honest price disclosure and was named Dealer of the Year by Time Magazine.
Herbert, or "Hickum," as he was known by friends and family, enjoyed a lifetime
career of service to his family, his employees, his
industry and his
state. Mr. Galles was inducted into the New Mexico Sports
Hall of Fame, and was a
former President of the UNM Lobo Club. He was Chairman of
the committee originally responsible for building the Albuquerque
Sports Stadium, as well as Chairman of the Board of PNM and of the Bank of New
Mexico. He was a member of the Ballut Abyad Shrine Club, the Royal Order of
Jesters, St. John's Episcopal Cathedral and Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He was a 32nd

Past President of the Western Shrine Association and Kiwanis Association. He was
awarded the Zimmerman award by UNM, and was a lifetime member of the UNM Boosters
Club and the Varsity Letterman's Club. Mr. Galles' love of life was evidenced by his
recovery from a recent stroke, his desire to continue working and his pride in attending
Lobo home football games. There were no gray areas in Hickum's life - he never
compromised character, honesty or a job well done.
Respected by his
competitors and manufacturers alike, in terms of character
and serenity, he was remarkable
in every sense of the word. He was a great man, and
treated everyone he met with friendship and dignity. Rumor has it

the University of Arizona. He was truly loved by his children, grandchildren,

Galles, Herbert Lee III
Herbert Lee. Friday
evening, June 1, Herbert Lee Galles III, "Lee", passed
away quietly and
comfortably. Lee's surviving family includes five
children, with eldest daughter, Terri Galles Bryan and her son, Lincoln
Stanfield, of Albuquerque, Tracee Galles Dezzutti and her husband, Robert Dezzutti, with
children Nicole and Jonathan Dezzutti of San Marino, California, Tim Galles and wife,
Nell Galles, with daughter Leilani Mae Galles of Royal Oak, Michigan, Amy Galles of
Richmond Virginia, and youngest son, Herbert Louis Galles
IV, "Bo", of Albuquerque.
Lee also cherished siblings Judi Friday of Taos, NM, Karen
Mische of Overland Park,
Kansas, and brother, Rick Galles of Albuquerque. With many
friends and devotion to
the Albuquerque cultural and economic community, Lee was
also blessed with
friends, colleagues, and a large close-knit family
featuring 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren surviving Lee's
recently passed father, Herbert Louis Galles "Hickum", in March 2007, and his
beloved mother, Fern Galles "Gigi", deceased February 2001. Lee was married to Glynelle
Hubbard Galles of Albuquerque and Leah Galles Fromer living in Fredericksburg,
Virginia. Lee wrote 15 books focused on the topic of automotive advertising. The works
were firsts of their kind and carried religiously by dealers and advertising agencies
across the country through the 1970's to the present. He was the only businessperson named
Adman of the Year and Dealer of the Year at the same time by the National Automotive
Dealer Association. Time magazine also named Lee as one of their Dealers of The
Year, and Adweek magazine recognized Lee as one of the 10 most influential advertising
professionals of the 1980's. Lee was devoted to the growth of Albuquerque and its
cultural and economic vitality. Much of his community efforts were focused on The
University of New Mexico. He was a UNM Lobo through and through. During his own years at
UNM, he was a letterman on the baseball team and a proud member of the Kappa Sigma
fraternity. He served as President of the Lobo Club, conducted the New Look campaign for
stadium improvements, and worked tirelessly to raise funds for recruitment and to
help develop community support for the team's objectives by soliciting more
booster involvement. On Fall Saturdays, he could always be
found cheering on his
beloved Lobos with his father and brother. For UNM, Lee
also represented UNM
College of Arts and Sciences with its Million Dollar
fund-raiser, "Make it to
the Plus Side." Galles taught Marketing 405 at the
Anderson School of Business, lectured boundlessly at automotive and
marketing seminars, universities, and spent two years consulting auto dealers and TV
stations in Australia and Canada. For Albuquerque, Galles brought the famous radio
personality, Paul Harvey, to the city to benefit the George Maloof Cancer Drive and was
on the executive committee of the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce,
Better Business Bureau, and Charter Revision committee, which made Albuquerque a
city with a mayor and city council. Lee served two terms as President of NM Auto
Dealers Association, six years as NADA Director, worked with Ralph Nadar on Dealer
Government Relations, was named Cadillac Master Dealer the first year it was established,
was the largest Oldsmobile dealer in the Pacific Region for 10 straight years, served on the
Cadillac National Dealer Advisory Board, and conducted over 300 advertising
seminars in all 50 states plus France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Canada, and Australia. Galles
started the first "non-Madison Avenue" agency to secure a national General Motors
accounts, Buick and GMC. Cutting a new path for businesses outside of traditional
circles, Lee was integral to the successes of the 1984 Olympic Games held in Los Angeles.
Working with admired Peter Ueberroth and Buick, Lee helped the Los Angeles Games
become the first profitable Olympics ever. Based on his stellar relationship with
General Motors, Lee also developed a 20-year relationship
with the NFL and Super
Bowl. Galles launched Hummer national advertising in 1992
and won Sports
Illustrated's first place for a multi-media ad campaign.
After starting revolutionary Albuquerque-based advertising agency,
Competitive Edge, and Sunrise Film Productions, with offices throughout the United
States and Australia, Lee derived a great sense of pride from former colleagues and
Competitive Edge employees who successfully opened their own agencies founded on his initial
principals of cost-efficient and effective automotive advertising and merchandising. Lee
was also the recipient of The Silver Medal Award from the New Mexico Advertising
Federation, honoring lifetime achievement. After spending
a life devoted to his
community's growth, health, and to the advertising,
creative, and automotive
industries, Galles often stated he was proud of all of his
children for cutting their
own paths and successful careers. Daughter, Terri Galles
Bryan, and son, Tim Galles,
have both received countless national marketing,
advertising, public relations, and creative awards in his wake. Daughter, Tracee
Dezzutti, attended USC Business School and the well-known Culinary
Institute of America in New York and contributes
significantly to
charitable development in the Los Angeles area; Daughter,
Amy Galles, was accepted into the fashion design program at Virginia
Commonwealth University, and son, Bo Galles, recently pledged SAE and
attends UNM while employed as a salesman at Galles Chevrolet. Lee Galles was a graduate
of Highland High School, New Mexico Military Institute, and UNM. He was a
longtime member of St. John's Cathedral where he will receive funeral service. In support
of New Mexico's children, their education and health, as well as substance abuse and family
care, the Galles family wishes any kind donations to go to All Faiths Receiving Home,
1709 Moon St. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87112, 505-271-0329. Attention: Gina

Geist, Jacob D.
Jacob D. (Jack) Geist,
one of Colorado and New Mexico's vintage pioneers of
telephone and
telegraph, checked his last section of line, declared it
good, said his good-byes and passed-on to a heavenly valley August 3,
2001. He was 94 years old. He died peacefully of age-related maladies at La Vida
Llena Retirement Center in Albuquerque, NM, surrounded with the love and tender
care of his immediate family and many friends. His life was both long and full. Jack's
work life began at age 16 when he left his Ft. Collins, CO home with $30 in his pocket. He
said he felt rich. He hired-on with the shipping department of Colorado Wholesale
Drug Co. in Denver, CO. After 18 months he left to work for Western Union, building the
Union Pacific telephone line that would run from Denver to El Paso, TX. Not long
thereafter he met Jessie, his wife-to-be, who was living
in a ?teacherage?
close to where he was constructing line near Arapaho, CO.
Months later he
changed jobs and began building telephone line for
Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph (later to be Mountain Bell) in
eastern Colorado and eastern New Mexico. He and Jessie were married not long
thereafter on August 3, 1929. Locations they lived and worked include Raton, Springer,
Clayton, Las Vegas, Taos, Albuquerque, Artesia, Estancia, Mountainair, and many
more, some more than once. Jessie, his wife of 72 years, once said they moved 88 times
in 25 years, but that wasn't all the moves, over the course of 42 years with Mountain
States T Jack did it all in telephone work , from telephone installation and line
construction to telephone office management in Springer, Taos, and Las Vegas. Jessie even
helped with operator duties at several work locations. Jack and his family moved to
Albuquerque in 1954 where he ended his career within the Engineering Department, retiring in
September 1971. His most cherished work years were those assigned to the Taos
office. He loved the surrounding areas and the people of Taos. He was proud to have
personally installed the first telephone at the Taos
Pueblo. In early
retirement years Jack maintained several downtown
Albuquerque parking lots. Passers-by got a cheerful wave and big smile
from under the broad-brimmed straw sombrero worn by this strong man, as he
labored long hours in the ABQ Journalwith his heavy leather gloves and
long-handled shovel. In later years he gave up the ?Lots?
and focused on his
gardens and lawn. He and Jessie journeyed to some distant
lands, but his favorite
places of comfort were his home and nearby Fox Park in
Albuquerque and visiting spots in Taos. Jack was born August 24, 1906
in Fort Collins, the last survivor of 12 siblings, son of Jacob and Katherine
Margaret Hill Geist. He is survived by his wife, Jessie Kathleen Wadley Geist of
Albuquerque; and three children, son, Jerry D. Geist and
wife, Sharon of
Albuquerque, NM, son, J. Michael Geist and wife, Charlotte
of La Grande, OR, and
daughter, Gretchen G. Shipley and husband, Bob of
Albuquerque. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 19
great-grandchildren who he loved very much and was always mindful of their
well-being. Jack was a long-time and supporting member of
the Bent Masonic Lodge in
Taos, NM and the First United Methodist Church in Albuquerque. He helped with various
programs within the church and devoted many hours locally to The Monday Grace Meal.
Jack was a strong man who was diligent in all he did. The strength and enjoyment he gained
from even the hardest of work performed, helped him battle like a warrior through a
variety of life and health crises. But, even the best of warriors find there is a time to end
the battle. He did it well and good. Memorial services will be held Monday, 2:00 p.m., at
First United Methodist Church, 314 Lead SW, with Dr. Ira Williams, Jr. officiating.
Private interment will precede services. Friends may visit

their flight. Her stomach never quite recovered. She worked in Fowler for Phillips Bakery
until the Fall of 1925, when she moved to Denver, CO to attend Colorado Woman's
College under a full scholarship. Jessie graduated with a
degree in education in
1927 and moved on to teach fourth grade in Arapaho,
Colorado for the next
three years. She lived in a women's boarding house, called
a"teacherage." It was in
Arapaho where she met Jacob Geist, whom she married in
1929. They shared 72 years of marriage together that included a period
of 25 years with 88 moves required by Jack's telegraph and telephone company's
employment. In the 1930s and 1940s Jack managed the telephone offices in Springer
and Taos, NM, and Jessie worked as a night operator. Money was tight in those days, and
over one five-year period she remembered her pay rose from 29 to 35 cents an hour.
She greeted people with the familiar"number please" when she answered those first
generation switchboards; between late hour calls she could
sometimes rest on a wood
and canvas cot. She often placed urgent and important
calls; one of those
was from Mabel Dodge Luhan of Taos to President Franklin
D. Roosevelt during
World War II. The next two telephone company transfers
took them to Las Vegas, NM in 1948 and to Albuquerque, NM in 1954.
She again ventured into the business world after her husband's retirement in
1971. For years they managed several parking lots in downtown Albuquerque. She did all
the bookkeeping, sales and collections for the space rentals. In the process she made
many new and lasting friends. Jessie was a dedicated and long-serving Sunday school
teacher in Las Vegas and Albuquerque churches. ?In 1940 she joined Eastern Star Chapter
42 in Springer, NM, served in various capacities there and in Taos and Las Vegas, and
became inactive in 1985. She was Worthy Matron of Taos Chapter 55 in 1945. She was
initiated into the Las Vegas PEO Sisterhood, Chapter AC in 1953, and in 1956 she
helped found and was a charter member of Chapter AH in Albuquerque where she attended
until her death. Jessie was a woman of great dignity, style, courage, character
and possessed a wonderful sense of humor. She was filled with caring and
thoughtfulness for everyone she knew. Her quick wit was a
delight to all her
family and friends, and she was attentive to their well
being, whether near or afar. She was known as a devoted wife, a loving
mother and grandmother, a trusted friend, and a true lady. Memorial services will
be held Saturday, 1:00 p.m., at First United? Methodist Church, 4th St. and Lead SW, with
Dr. Terry Anderson officiating. A memorial service for residents of La Vida Llena will be

Gonzales, Clarissa
Earl and Clarissa
Gonzales, Father, daughter beloved in Questa By Jonathan
McDonald, The Taos
News, September 9, 1999 QUESTA The village is in shock.
Earl and Clarissa Gonzales,
a father and daughter, have been slain in their home. He
was shot, and she was
strangled. No one can believe it. Questa is used to drug
violence, but not to random death, not to the killing of a child, not to
the death of a father in his home. The 51-year-old man was remembered as a quiet
resident who loved his daughter and helping his neighbors. His 9-year-old daughter,
a fifth-grader at Alta Vista Elementary School, was remembered as a friendly and smart
girl who smiled a lot. Earl Gonzales was not involved in drugs or crime, and "he was not a
troublemaker," According to Questa Police Chief Frank Gallegos. This is the first
case in 13 years Gallegos can remember being linked to Earl Gonzales. "Everybody knew him,"
Gallegos said. "He was well-liked." Gonzales worked for Rocky Mountain Youth
Corps as a crew supervisor and, according to RMYC projects director Carl Colonius,
helped restore 13 homes last year for the elderly. "He was
enthusiastic and
committed. He really gave a lot of thought to how to help
his crews, how to
provide more than just the practical education. He made
real attempts to befriend and help his crew members," he said. This was
evident at Tuesday's (Sept. 7) funeral for Gonzales, when several of the kids
who worked on his crew showed up in Questa for the services. "That's pretty
extraordinary in this day and age for young people to go
pay their respects to
an employer. That says a lot about the connection and the
impact Earl had," Colonius
said. While family and friends buried Earl Gonzales at the
Pablito Cemetery in Questa,
Clarissa Gonzales was buried in Las Animas, Colo., where
her mother lives. The young
girl also attended school in Colorado before transferring
to Questa in second grade.
Flags at Clarissa Gonzales' school flew at half-staff
Friday (Sept. 3), and counselors
were called in to talk with the children there. Clarissa's
schoolmates worked on murals
and art that will be used to decorate Alta Vista
Elementary. Last year, Clarissa Gonzales won the top prize at the La Cienega
Elementary School science fair. "She was a sweet little girl. She always
smiled, and she went everywhere with her dad," said one Questa woman outside the Village
Stop 'n' Go. She asked that she not be identified, saying she was scared the killer
would see her name and possibly come after her. Former Questa Mayor Bobby Ortega also
described the slain girl as delightful. "She was a lovable
little girl," he said. As
her father's boss, Colonius said, "She was a little light.
She was one of those
kids that was absolutely a pleasure to have kicking around
your office." Reporter Staci
Matlock contributed to this report.

Gonzales, Joaquin "Jack"
Guards, jail boss
exchange allegations over problems By Sara Ford, The Taos
News, December 2, 1999
The truth surrounding the events involving the death of
Joaquin "Jack" Gonzales,
42, who died shortly after he was jailed in the Taos
County detention facility on Nov. 20, or Andrew Martinez's escape from an
inmate work detail Nov. 18 may not be known until two separate
investigations being conducted by the New Mexico State
Police are completed.
In the meantime, hard feelings and nasty allegations are
surfacing between
county officials and a number of detention officers who
have been suspended or resigned.
The finger-pointing began almost immediately after
Martinez eluded two detention
officers watching him and nine other inmates rake leaves
around the county courthouse
complex. District Judge Glenn Ellington held county public
safety director Ambrose
Mascareñas in contempt of court. The public safety
director immediately made his case before the media, blaming guard
Modesta Cisneros for allowing Martinez, a flight risk accused of murder, outside. He
also alleged the escape was an "inside job." While Cisneros has remained mum ever since
the escape, her fellow officers quickly came to her defense, in particular Joe
Rodriguez, president of the local chapter of the American
Federation of State,
County and Municipal Employees, the county employee union.
Rodriguez said that none
of the guards at the Taos County detention facility would
take money to help an
inmate escape, especially not his inmate. "This man that
escaped (Andrew
Martinez) is accused of killing a law enforcement
officer's brother, and there is no way that any of us would have let this guy go
for any reason," Rodriguez said. Martinez is accused of killing Chris Medina in
October. Medina's brother, Rick Medina, is a Taos County deputy sheriff. Angry at the
allegations and concerned about safety conditions in the jail, Rodriguez resigned Nov.
23. "I resigned because of the unsafe conditions at the facilities that were created by
Ambrose Mascareñas," Rodriguez said. The former detention officer charges that
Mascareñas has failed to provide adequate staffing, failed
to train new guards
adequately and allowed inmates to violate jail policies by
wearing their own
clothing, jewelry and bringing food into the facility.
Mascareñas, who has had his job only four months, claims he inherited many of
the jail's problems. As far as staffing is concerned, the county's tight budget
restricted overtime. As the war of sound bites and quotes escalated prior to Martinez's
capture, both sides dug in. Union members contacted AFSCME officials and attorneys,
while the county suspended five jailers with pay. Three of
the jailers were on duty
when Martinez escaped. They are Cisneros, who was working
in the jail at the
time of the escape, and Roy Abeyta and Rick Trujillo, work
detail guards. Detention
officers Chris Trujillo and Miguel Suazo were on duty when
Gonzales died and have
been suspended. Jailer Frank Romero also resigned. In one
notification of suspension
obtained by The Taos News, Mascareñas informed one of the
suspended guards that
his continued employment created a substantial risk of
harm to the citizens of Taos County. Mascareñas called for the
guard's termination. While the guards are refusing to comment on the death of
Gonzales because it is under investigation, they allege that it was Mascareñas who
ordered Martinez out without shackles that morning and allowed prisoners to wear sweat
suits instead of jail garb. "Ambrose Mascareñas instructed myself, Rick Trujillo,
Chris Trujillo and Frank Romero not to use the shackles with those guys because it was too
hard for them to walk around. I think the word was inhumane that he used," Rodriguez
said. Cisneros, the jailer on duty, selected Martinez for the work detail, Mascareñas
said. "I told them (detention officers) before. If you
take these people out,
you shackle them ... a murderer has to be shackled,"
Mascareñas said. While
county attorney Dale Morrison has issued a memo preventing
county employees from
talking about the jail incidents the attorney said the
gag order will contain rumors and keep information factual union
representative John LaBombard said Morrison's gag order will not prevent the ugly
truth about the Taos County jail from surfacing. A pre-disciplinary hearing for the
suspended officers is scheduled Tuesday (Dec. 7). ** GONZALES, Joachin - A father
remembers By Inez Russell, The Taos News, May 11, 2001 Willie Gonzales, before he will
talk at length about his son, Joaquin Gonzales, wants you to know about his other
children. One is a mathematician, another an insurance executive. Still another is a court
reporter, and so on and so on. He said simply, "Our children are all well set up." "I
tell you this," Gonzales said, "because I want you to
know. Jack was from
good people. He was good people." Those people say their
son, their brother
didn't deserve to die in the Taos County jail. What's
worse for Gonzales and other family members is that they don't believe the
man they called Jack died naturally. They believe Joaquin "Jack" Gonzales was
killed. Now that Taos County has settled a civil lawsuit brought by Gonzales'
ex-wife, who is the mother of his two boys, Willie
Gonzales wants to see
a criminal case move forward. "I want John Paternoster's
number," Gonzales said,
speaking of the Eighth Judicial District Attorney. "I want
to get on his case to see what he's going to do to prosecute what I
think is a murderer." In the meantime, he wants the people of Taos to know his son
as his family knew him, as a loving son, brother, talented artist and dedicated
father. "He hadn't had any trouble as long as they took
him to get his
medication," Gonzales said of his son in an interview from
his Silver City home. That,
unfortunately, was the trouble for Joaquin Gonzales. He
didn't take the Dilantin he needed to function. When he went off his
medication, he had severe seizures, the kind he was having the night he died. He had
other psychiatric troubles that compounded his illness. It wasn't always so. "He
went through high school, and before graduation, he was offered an engineering scholarship.
They pressed him and pressed him and pressed him because of his brains and ability,"
Gonzales said. "He had a lot of potential. He had a wonderful brain." A father's
memories: Days when his son pitched Peewee League Baseball, motorcycle races, a boy so
stubborn he refused medical treatment after receiving a football injury that
most likely triggered his epilepsy. "I forget at what age
they put them in the
Peewee League, 6 or 7 years old, and he was made a
pitcher," Gonzales remembered.
"The other boys would crash into Jack, running into him.
Pretty soon he had a
bloody nose with snot on it and dirt on it. He was
bleeding, but not badly ... I'm not one to interfere. I let him go on and
on. The score was 55-56, and Jack stuck it out all the
way. He came to the
bleachers where we were at, we got the towel and started
cleaning him and he
got a standing ovation. He was just that way. He was not a
quitter. He always wanted
to excel." That became harder as his epilepsy took hold of
his life, especially when Joaquin Gonzales either wouldn't or couldn't
afford to take his medicine. It was hard at the beginning of his illness, as well.
Willie Gonzales' long-time employer refused to cover the medicine his son needed. "I worked
extra at my building trade, and I worked at the mine," Gonzales said. "I worked four years
straight graveyard while working on the outside during the day (to buy it)." But
still, Gonzales lived his life, playing sports and staying
active. Despite good
grades in high school, his father said, "He was an honor
student. All my
children were honor students" -- Gonzales chose a
different path. He moved to Taos and began working with his hands, as his
father had taught him. He started a teepee business with a friend, then went
into contracting and building. He built furniture, walls,
fireplaces many
beautiful things, things his family still treasures. But
his life became increasingly
hard. "It got bad," his father said, "because we are so
far away. He was up there,
and by now, he had a wife and two kids." Those kids, says
Willie Gonzales, meant the
world to his son. "That was his pride and joy, forever and
forever. He wanted to take care of them so badly," Gonzales said. "The
epilepsy and the stress started working on him so badly that it just tore him
to pieces." His family never quit on Joaquin Gonzales. They helped him find places to live,
paid for his medicine, loaned him a truck. When they were worried he couldn't drive, his
parents bought him a bike. They did this three times, because Gonzales' bikes kept getting
stolen. His luck kept getting worse, and finally on Nov. 20, 1999, Joaquin Gonzales'
luck ran out. Instead of going to the hospital where he could receive treatment, he went to
jail. Less than an hour after being booked in, he was found unconscious in his cell. His
family is still in shock. They have their memories, and they have an apology from Taos
County. His sons will be taken care of by the financial settlement in the case. All that's
left for Willie Gonzales is to wonder whether there will
be justice for Joaquin
Gonzales. "I don't know whether it would be worth the time
and trouble, but I
would like to have some satisfaction of some kind,"
Gonzales said. "What was done to our son was wrong, wrong, wrong. "This
happened, and we're still devastated."

Gonzales, Rebecca
Velarde
August 06, 2000, The
Santa Fe New Mexican, Page: B-2, REBECCA VELARDE GONZALES, Age 90, a native of Santa
Fe passed away in San Diego, CA on August 3, 2000. She was born October 27, 1909,
before the arrival of statehood in the Territory of New Mexico, to Camila Giron and
Telesfor Velarde at Las Cienegitas. As a child she attended St. Francis Catholic
Parochial School, and as a young lady worked for the White
Swan Laundry before her
marriage to Frank G.Gonzales on June 29, 1933 at Our Lady
of Guadalupe Church.
Enduring the difficult times of a divorced parent during
the late 1940's and
into the mid 1960's, she worked for Rawley's Bakery as an
icer, domestic help, child care, and as a moccasin stitcher for Lazar
Bros. to support her four children, ending her working years as a tray girl at the
old St. Vincent Hospital. Eventually she was lured from Santa Fe by her younger daughter
who, as a member of the Armed Forces, shared with her the adventure of motoring cross
country in an MG as change in military duty stations dictated their life style. She
quickly became the Jet-Set Grandmother. An easy smile, the
proud tilt to her head
and the bold determination to prove "It's a great life if
you don't weaken.......and
I ain't about to weaken" gave her children the inner
strength to pursue their
goals with that same spirit. From her kitchen the art of
tortillas, tamales and biscochitos
was passed on to her granddaughters with that deep
cultural pride that she possessed. Her language was colorful and
blunt with a truth that could chill. When confronted with the old Spanish
proverbs that she introduced with "Mama siempre decia....." any member of this large
and extended family knew her wrath was about to descend. Her powerful and graphic
moral lectures were never forgotten and never taken lightly. Rebecca went on to raise
granddaughters, Francine Ingrid Shore and Sabrina Ginger Shore both of California. She
is preceded in death by the father of her children, her parents, sisters: Rosarita
Apodaca and Julia Romero; and brothers: Nicholas and Vicente Velarde. She is survived by
her children: Gladys M. Oakeley and husband Robert of Taos, Frances Iola Shore USMC

Oakeley and wife Agnes and Rebecca Nicole Francesca Dolores Oakeley of Taos, Vicente
Gonzales and Lisa Gonzales-Chapman and husband Don of Washington state, Michael
Anthony Gonzales and wife Tiffany of Albuquerque, Jerry Frank Gonzales and Kathy
Gonzales of Indiana; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters: Christine Velarde and Gregorita
Martinez of Santa Fe; nieces and nephews: Mabel Apodaca of Santa Fe with whom she
enjoyed a very dear friendship, Epimenia Garcia and Louie Apodaca of California, Maria
Chavez, Dorothy Quintana, Eloy Velarde, Gilbert Velarde, Virginia Romero, Sister
Josephine Romero, Consuelo Duran and husband Antonio, Robert C de Baca and wife
Consuelo of Santa Fe, David Romero and wife Consuelo, Victor Bustos and wife
Erminda of Albuquerque, Elmer Martinez of Washington state; and 67 grand-nieces and
nephews. We include in our family Marlene Moya-Arsola of Santa Fe, who enjoyed a nurturing
and extraordinary childhood at the hands of this firm disciplinarian and proud woman of
high principles and great love. Rebecca was a member of La Union Protectiva Feminina as
was her mother before her. Arrangements are under the direction of McGee Memorial

Gorman, R.C.
Internationally
acclaimed artist R.C. Gorman died peacefully November 03,
2005 at 12:20 p.m. He
was 74 years-old. Gorman was hospitalized for close to
seven weeks undergoing treatment
for a bacterial blood infection highly resistant to
antibiotic treatment. The infection resulted in multiple complications
including pneumonia, kidney failure and coma from which he never recovered. He
was first hospitalized at the Holy Cross Hospital in Taos, and then transported to
intensive care at UNM Hospital on September 24th. Gorman was known for his distinctive
artistic expression of Navajo women through lithographs, original paintings,
bronze sculptures and ceramics. He possessed a gregarious nature and was generous
with his affection for family and friends. Although known as "R.C." or simply "Gorman"
to the public, his parents Adelle Katherine Brown and Carl Nelson Gorman named him
Rudolph Carl Gorman. He was raised by his mother and maternal grandmother, Zonnie
Maria Brown at Black Mountain, Arizona. His brother and sisters agree that "R.C.'s
spirit was unique. Zonnie Gorman, his youngest sister
said, "He never lost
touch with his Navajo soul. He never lost touch with his
roots and that kept him
very humble. His soul emanates in his work, whether it was
a beautiful scene with mountains
and canyons, women or whether it was a simple sketch.
Although R.C. the man
is no longer with us, his spirit will never die. R.C. is
truly a role model for young Native Americans, who want to pursue art and
even those who want to pursue business or any kind of dream. He showed that
nothing is impossible for Native people and that we can do it on our own terms and say
it in our own way. Many people remember our father, Carl Gorman mostly for being one of
the original first 29 Navajo Code Talkers but he was also one of the early Indian artists
to break away from what was called "Indian Art." In his own way, he opened a lot of doors
for his son, R.C. In turn, R.C. has flung those doors wide open for current and future
creative endeavors for Native people."Gorman was the oldest of five siblings who survive
him they are: Don Mitchell from Chinle, Arizona; Donna Scott, from Chinle, Arizona; Shirley
Beecher from Black Mountain, Arizona; Carla Anderson from Kaibeto, Arizona and
Zonnie Gorman from Gallup, New Mexico. Rosary was recited on Sunday, November 06,
2005 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Funeral service was held on Monday, November
07, 2005 at the Sagebrush Inn Convention Center, 1508 South Santa Fe Road, in
Taos, NM. Interment was near his home at Las Colonias, NM. A reception followed
the interment. In lieu of flowers, donations to the R.C. Gorman (Scholarship) Foundation are

Grossetete, Alec Paul
Alec Paul Grossetete,
was born September 5, 1934, at Womens and Childrens
Hospital in
Albuquerque, and died suddenly January 14, 2004. He was
from a New Mexico pioneer family. Alec was a descendant of Antoine
Grossetete whose name is inscribed on the Victory Monument at Yorktown,
Virginia. Antoine fought with the French artillery of General Rochambeau which aided
General George Washington in the most decisive battle of the American War for
Independence. Antoine died in the Battle of Yorktown, 1781, at the age of 30. Alec's
great-grandparents, Clothilde and Auguste Grossetete, originally came to America by
sailing ship from the region of France known as Alsace-Lorraine. The family
eventually came to New Mexico in 1880 as homesteaders in Catron County. Alecs two
great-uncles were ambushed and murdered: Alexis by cattle
barons who wanted his
water rights and Fred who was gunned down on a cattle
drive. The early
history of the Grossetetes in New Mexico has been
chronicled by authors Victor Westphall and Howard Bryan, among others. The
Grossetete family moved to Albuquerque in the 1920s. Alec's father,
Aleck, was one of the founders of the EverReady Oil Company. Alec's first job was as
a 6 year old gas station attendant at his fathers service station. His father left the
family oil business in the 1940s to found his investment and construction company, La Mesa
Builders, Inc. Alec, and his brother Don, grew up with La Mesa Builders and eventually took
over running the company. La Mesa Builders, Inc. built many schools, gymnasiums,
public buildings, and housing in New Mexico and southern Colorado, including the
Girl Scout camp in the Jemez mountains. La Mesa's Taos, New Mexico Courthouse Complex
won several awards, as did many of its other projects. Alec married his high
school sweetheart, Ginger Taylor, in June 1954. She was the love of his life, and his best
friend. In December they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on a cruise with their
daughters' families. Alec was preceded in death by his grandparents, Dutch and Toots
Williamson, Gus and Maude Grossetete; a daughter, Susan Denise "Neice" in 1964, his
father Aleck in 1992, and his mother-in-law, Bonnie Taylor Williams in 1998. Alec lives
on in his wife Ginger; his mother, Memaw Sue; brother, Don Grossetete and wife, Jackie;
sister, Cerelle Hippeli and husband, Julian; daughters, Gay Blech and husband, Dusty, Teri
Maclennan and husband, Brian; grandchildren, Briana and Kessick Blech, Joseph and

celebration of his life will take place Saturday, January

Christian Church, 10101 Montgomery NE. In lieu of flowers,
