Pacheco, Sophie
Sophie Pacheco, 80, Local
Ranchos de Taos Resident and Community Volunteer passed away on June 25, 2006. On many
occasions at the end of her life some would call her Doña Sophronia. A great honor
bestowed upon an ordinary woman with an extraordinary heart. Little in her
life was about what she accomplished for herself but about what she gave to others and how
she could be of service. The elderly, the needy and the down in spirit were often the
recipients of her amazing faith, generosity and goodwill. Throughout her life she had
a strong relationship with the Presbyterian Church. In particular the Ranchos de Taos
Church, serving in many capacities, including board member and volunteer extraordinaire of
the Loma Verde Summer Camp for children. In her later years she would devote
herself tirelessly to Habitat for Humanity as a board member, fundraiser, and a hand with a
hammer and a broom, working locally and in Mexico and Cuba. Even when immigrant
rights and environmental conservation were not popular Sophie was in the forefront in
her community finding resolution and educating those around her by example. She is
known to many for her constant attention to conservation, and her daily bike rides
to work. She was making and delivering meals, long before "Meals on Wheels" and always
had someone she needed to visit with a smile and a prayer. Over the past 20 years serving
as sales clerk of Navajo Silver and recently The Covered Wagon - stores owned by her
son and daughter–in law, George and Lyndee Cook - she was an ever pleasant
greeter for those travelers seeking not only Native American crafts but local advice and
stories given with a warm heart. She had a great affinity for the Hispanic and Native
American cultures, understanding the importance of keeping those cultures vibrant and
alive in this ever-present movement towards assimilation. With her heart always in
Taos, even when she left to reside elsewhere she always returned, as she has once more.
Born and raised in the then small villages of Ranchitos and Ranchos de Taos, to
Ramoncita Vialpando Pacheco and Manuel Lauro Pacheco, on April 14th 1926. She was
one of six sisters four brothers with only the oldest
and youngest sisters,
Juanita Isabel Garcia of Ranchos de Taos and Maria Laura
Riddle, of Hartsville,
PA. surviving. From her first marriage to Gaines Allen Cook,
daughter Catherine Cook
Gerry and her son, of Stone Ridge, NY and son George Allen
Cook and his five
children of Albuquerque, NM, survive her. David Cook, a
second son from her marriage
to Mr. Cook, died at the young age of three of accidental
causes. She missed him
dearly. From her second marriage to Tito Martinez, an only
son Arthur Martinez and his
life long partner Cathy Baca survive her. Many nieces and
nephews also survive her. For those who knew and loved her, the last six
months of her life were a gift of love and support for all as she struggled with
bone cancer. She can now rest in peace as she has gone home. Ahora está en paz al lado
de Dios. Evening service was held on, June 28, 2006 at Rivera Chapel in Taos. Funeral
service was held on June 29, 2006 at Ranchos Presbyterian Church. Interment was
held at Descanso Cemetery.

Perez, Albert
Albert Perez. And the Lord
said, "Good job, my shepherd-now come on home." Friday, November 13, 2009. It is a sad day for
the Albert Perez family-but what a great day in Heaven. There it's just breaking
daylight. The sky's magenta, pickup engines are being revved, helicopter blades are starting
their roll, cowboys are saddled up on fresh horses. Laughter and raucous conversation fill
the chilly air. This could be the best coyote hunt ever. And life will continue on here,
as it should, but not without dear memories held closely and safely to our hearts.
Albert Perez had many loves-family, friends, sheep, ranching, rain (damn, it's dry),
sheep, hunting, fishing, sports (let's go Aggies!), sheep, a
good day's work, bologna on
white bread (again, Albert?), Corinne's roast leg of lamb, sheep; and one deep, abiding hate most
worthy of mention-any live coyote. Albert was born in Flagstaff, AZ on May 28, 1922
to parents Ramon and Ysaura Perez. The family moved to New Mexico in 1927, where
they began assembling ranches near Yeso, Pastura, and Pintada. Here Albert's
siblings, Anna, Carmen, Ramon, and Alice were born. At the age of seven, Albert was
already camping with sheep bands. He attended school in a one-room schoolhouse in
Buchanan and in Vaughn, where he graduated from high school in 1941, then joined
uncles Narciso and Manuel and a couple other hired hands in fencing the entire ranch. He
left the ranch to attend New Mexico A (now NMSU) for a short time, but returned when
WWII began. Albert met Corinne Ribera, the light of his life, when his sister brought her
out to the ranch from Albuquerque to ride horses. They married on August 30, 1947 and
continued with a partnership, friendship, and love that lasted 62 years. After living in
Flagstaff for a short time, the couple moved to the ranch at Pintada, NM and proceeded to
raise their family. Eventually they moved to Vaughn, where Albert was a longtime
member of the Vaughn School Board. In addition, Albert was chairman of the Guadalupe
County Soil and Water Conservation District for thirty years, and was honored with the
New Mexico Wool Growers' 2000 Sheepman of the Year. Albert was the consummate
rancher and steward of the land. As with any good shepherd, the care of his livestock
and family came first, his pasture and water shortly behind. He led by example-his life,
his hearty laugh (AhhOOOF!), his honor and love are all the lessons we need carry on.
Adios y a Dios, Alberto. Albert is survived by his wife of 62 years, Corinne; son Albert (Tibo)
Perez and wife Robin of Taos; son Narciso Perez of Albuquerque; daughter Cambria Masci
and husband Greg of Gallup; daughter Pier and husband Lane of San Diego, CA;
grandchildren Cassidy Nunn and husband James of Montrose, CO, Kendall Perez of
Greeley, CO, Sean Perez of Las Cruces, and Giuliano Masci of Gallup; sisters Anna Osle of
Albuquerque and Alice Perez of Vaughn; along with numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws,
out-laws, and other beautiful friends he thought of as family. In addition to his parents,
Ramon and Ysaura, Albert was preceded in death by his brother, Ramon, and a sister, Carmen.
Pallbearers will be Vincent Perez, Dominic Perez, Bruce Dereta, Frank Perez, John
Spensieri, and Carlos Armendariz. Honorary pallbearers are Mannie Aguilar,
Alfredo Flores, Charlie Serrano, Butch Del Curto, Gino Lujan, Jack Achen, Jim Sachse, Earl

Pinnelli, Ringsella
Ringsella Pingselli, 67,
passed away in Taos on October 17, 2009, after enduring
cancer. She was born on
August 7, 1942, in Stockholm, Sweden, to Stig and Elsa
Westerlund Ringselli.
The family moved to Lulea in northern Sweden where she grew
up sailing in her own
small boat, skiing and developing a lifelong appreciation
for nature. She went to Paris in the 1960s to study mime, then to New York
City with a friend with the idea of becoming an actress. She studied theatre in New
York and did some acting. She also became a painter and muralist. Her works are
characterized by a colorful palette and whimsical subject matter. In New York City, she
met what friends describe as her soul mate, Joseph Pinnelli, at the time that he was
opening the Fillmore East. Ringsella won a New York State award for promising artists in
the 1970s. She had shows at many galleries throughout her life, including
Stanford University. The couple married and traveled the country, passing through, and falling
in love with, Taos. They moved to Taos where they opened a gallery across the street
from the old Apple Tree restaurant. After Joseph's sudden death, Ringsella traveled to
Hawaii and California but her heart was in Taos. She spent four years in Las Vegas, NM, in
the 1980s attending New Mexico Highlands University and pursuing her artistic
endeavors, but returned to live in Taos until the end of her life. She is credited with
painting a number of murals in Santa Fe, Taos and other locales. Besides an artist, Ringsella
was an astute astrologist and a highly creative fashion designer. She enjoyed a simple life as
a pacifist. She loved her pets and all animals. She always sought out truth and beauty.
She had an extremely caring nature and a great social conscience. Her friends also
remember her excellent culinary skills, especially chocolate truffles and mango
margaritas. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by her two
brothers Lasse and Lingon Ringselli, and sister-in-law Boitt Mare Ringselli,
all of Sweden; beloved friend Richard Benn; and numerous other friends and admirers. A
memorial gathering is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at the Mabel Dodge
Lujan House with food to follow. Food and flowers as Prasad for the occasion are
appreciated.
