Reeves, Ozzie
Ozzie Reeves, 84,
formerly of La Villita, New Mexico died in Tulsa,
Oklahoma on June 16, 2010. He was born in Camp springs, Texas
to the late James W. and Valeria (Lipham) Reeves. During his childhood,
his family traveled between Alabama and Arizona where
Ozzie worked
delivering groceries, picking cotton, and selling
citrus fruit on street corners. He attended various elementary schools in
Alabama, Texas and Arizona but the greatest regret of his life was that he
was only able to complete eighth grade. Wanting a
better life for
himself, he enlisted in the Navy at age 17, convincing
his mother to forge his father's signature to allow him to join
while underage. He enlisted as a ship's serviceman
cobbler and served
on the USS Vicksburg seeing action in the Pacific
Theater during WWII. During his service in the Navy, he
learned telecommunications and following his honorable
discharge, he went to
work for Mountain States Telephone Company as a
lineman and cable
splicer. He worked on the telephone lines between El
Paso, Texas and Trinidad, Colorado. In 1947, he lived in Los
Alamos, New Mexico and worked as a cable splicer and lineman at Los Alamos National
Laboratory. Additionally, he worked on the weekends
for J.E. "Tip"
Tipton who owned the Espanola Telephone Company. One
of the towns in which
he did telephone work was Las Vegas, New Mexico where
he met one of the switchboard
operators, Jane Ellen Cartwright. On December 4, 1948,
they were married in
Las Vegas, New Mexico. In 1951, Ozzie had the
opportunity to purchase the telephone company in Chama, New Mexico. He
and Jane moved to Chama where he did all of the outside work (putting up poles,
stringing wire and maintaining the lines) and Jane operated the switchboard, did
inside installation and handled the billing. They
started with 46
customers and had 4,600 when they sold it. In 1957, he
purchased the telephone company in Pagosa Springs, Colorado,
moved his family over there, and commuted between Pagosa and Chama. In
1958, he sold the Pagosa company and he and the family moved back to Chama. He
was an avid fisherman and hunter and he and Ozzie Washburn often led hunting and
fishing expeditions, once taking an editor for Sports
Illustrated up on the
Cumbres to fish. He was responsible for putting in the
telephone lines that
went over Cumbres Pass into Antonito. Colorado.
Several times he assisted the train crews on the D when they became
stuck going over the Cumbres Pass. He worked hard to get the village of Chama
incorporated and was elected one of its first
councilmen. Prior to
that, recognizing the need for fresh, pure drinking
water in Chama, he became president of the Community Water
Association which, through a state aid program,
drilled a deep
well, installed pumps and tanks and extended water
lines. He was instrumental in the completion of Highway 64 from Taos to
Tierra Amarilla. In 1962, he purchased the Espanola Telephone Company from
J.E. Tipton and merged that with his Chama company to form the Rio Arriba
Telephone Company. His family moved to La Villita in
July 1962. In
Espanola he was a member of Kiwanis Club, a volunteer
fireman, one of the original founders of Valley National
Bank, and a board member of El Pueblo State Bank (now Community Bank). He also
worked with Roy Honstein to develop Big Rock Shopping Center becoming a part
owner of Valley Drugs and Tewa Lanes Bowling Alley. In 1966, he sold the telephone
company to Trans-Continental Telephone and realized a
life-long dream of
owning race horses, traveling to Kentucky to purchase
four thoroughbred
yearlings who would become La Villita Ruler, La
Villita Lady, Princess Flame, and Nasky Lyn. He owned, raced and
trained thoroughbreds until 1981 racing at tracks in California, New
Mexico, Colorado, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania
eventually owning
fifty and standing two stallions at stud-O Be Joyful
and Real Petty. During this time he was a member of the New
Mexico Horse Breeders' Association and lobbied for passage of a bill to award
incentive monies to owners and breeders of New Mexico
breds. In 1980 he
was awarded the association's Horseman of the Year
Award. Throughout his life he was very active politically. In
1968 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention and in 1982, he was
elected to serve on the Jemez Mountains Electric Cooperative Board of Directors.
In 1993, he sold his property in New Mexico and purchased a 1600-acre ranch in
Vera, Oklahoma where he raised cattle and pecans. He was preceded in death by his
parents; his wife of 52 years, Jane; his brothers,
James Douglas
Reeves and Richard Zenther Reeves. He is survived by
his long-time companion,
Betty Joy With; his children, daughter Marilyn Reeves
and husband Matthew Maes; son Mike Reeves; and daughter Peggy
and husband Howard Reed; four grandsons, Jason, Justin and John Scott
and Robert Reeves; two great-grandchildren, Aiden Ozzie Scott and Olivia
Jane Scott; his brother Larry Reeves and wife Jamie;
and his sister
Barbara "Bobbie" Swinney. Cremation has taken place
and a celebration of Ozzie's life will be held in September.

Ribak, Beatrice
Mandelman
Albuquerque Journal,
July 12, 1998, Beatrice Mandelman Ribak, 85, of Taos,
passed away at
home late on the evening of June 24, 1998, most likely
the longest residing artist living in the Taos community. Bea was
born on December 31, 1912 to Louis and Anna Lisker Mandelman in Newark, New
Jersey. Always an artist, her early years in the New York area led to contacts with
leading artists of the day. She studied at the School
of Fine and
Industrial Art in Newark, New Jersey, College for
Women (Rutgers University) and the Art Students League, and also studied
independently with several artists, most notably with Fernand Leger in Paris
during 1948-1949. Bea was part of the Works Progress Administration's Federal Arts
Project, working both as a serigrapher and muralist.
In 1942 she
married her late husband, artist Louis Ribak, and in
1944 they moved to Taos, having come to the southwest at the suggestion
of Ribak's teacher, the artist John Sloan. Bea and Louis founded and taught at
the Taos Valley Art School from 1947 through its
closing in 1953.
They were part of the founding of the Taos Art
Association and the Stables Gallery in the early 50's and through the
years were passionately committed to their art and ideals, and always actively
involved in the Taos art community. In their life
together, they
resided for periods in Mexico and Greece, and also
traveled extensively, travels motivated in large part by Bea's
adventurous spirit and profound curiosity about life.
After Louis
Ribak's death in 1979, Bea continued to travel
regularly to Mexico and one to Brazil, with each trip inspiring new
developments in her paintings. Bea's work reflects an
intense, lifelong
commitment to art, her persevering will and intent to
achieve her own truly unique expression in art. Bea's work has been
shown regionally in many galleries. She has shown at a multitude of museums,
including the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of
Art, Metropolitan Museum, Museum of New Mexico, University of New Mexico Art
Museum and the Harwood Museum. The subject of numerous articles (latest being
Forbes, May 4, 1998 issue), a book titled Beatrice Mandelman, Taos Modernist was
published by the University of New Mexico Press in 1995. She is survived by a
loving community of friends and colleagues together
with cousins,
nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations can
be made in memory of Bea Mandelman to the Harwood Museum to
provide funding for the purchase of works by living artists of the Taos area.
A community memorial service will be held at the
Harwood Museum on
Friday, July 17, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Ritchie, Lyndel M.
Lyndel M. Ritchie
was born in Eugene, MO, April 11, 1924. Our loving
father, grandfather and friend passed away Friday, August 10,
2007. Lyndel grew up in Jefferson City, MO where he graduated from high
school in 1942. He joined the Navy after high school
and served for the
duration of WWII, receiving his Honorable Discharge in
1946. Lyndel then began
his 35 year career with Mt. States Telephone Company,
with a short interruption. In 1950 the National Guard, which he had
joined the previous year, was activated and shipped to Ft. Bliss, TX. He
made Master Sergeant and at the end of the Korean
trouble in 1952,
he was again discharged, returning back to Albuquerque
to resume his career with Mt. States. On June 21, 1947, Lyndel
and Jean were married at First Presbyterian Church in Albuquerque. They
lived in Albuquerque together until 1958, when then
moved to Belen

to travel, making
two trips to California this year to spend cherished
time with his family, whom he loved and was so proud of. Lyndel also
loved the outdoors, camping and fishing. A regular on the golf course, he was never
short of a good golf story or joke. However, his most
fond and favorite
times were those spent with family and friends. Lyndel
was a dear and gentle

Romero, Sam Santana
I want to announce
the passing of Sam Santana Romero. He recently passed
away peacefully,
due to a long illness. His passing came quick and he
was laid to rest, the next day in Taos, in the traditions of Taos
Pueblo custom. Sam was a Taos Pueblo man, living, working, and raising his family
here in Albuquerque. He lived a full and happy life,
filled with
family, hunting, camping, fishing and later, the
casinos. Sam retired as a gasoline pump installation and repair
man. After retirement, he was an accomplished feather
artist and
travelled the country doing shows. Patience, love and
compassion, and a heart of gold was what my father possessed. He
always had a smile for everyone. Sam was a very spiritual man, both in the
Native and Catholic ways. He is now happily in the
world of his ancestors
and all of his beloved family, and with the Lord.
Special Thank you to Pete and Rose. ABQJournal May 23,

Rosen, Richard M.
February 26, 2000,
The Santa Fe New Mexican, Page: A-1, TAOS -- A Taos
psychiatrist died
Thursday night when his small airplane crashed in a
snowstorm less than a mile from Taos Municipal Airport. Before the crash,
Dr. Richard M. Rosen, 50, was on the radio to friend and fellow pilot Jim
Cope, who lives on a ranch south of Tres Piedras. "It
was a freak
snowstorm that wasn't on the weather radar," Cope said
Friday. "Of course the weather radar doesn't always extend very
far up here. He said that he started icing up and he began to think that he was in
serious trouble." Cope said he had spoken to Rosen repeatedly as he flew his Cessna
182 north to Taos from Albuquerque. Before the crash,
Cope said Rosen told
him that he could see the lights of the Taos airport
intermittently through
the snow. "The plane did not stop flying," Cope said.
"He told me that he was collecting ice, and there's some
speculation that the control surfaces iced up."
Rosen's last radio
transmission was at about 6:45 p.m., New Mexico State
Police Lt. Richard Newman said. Officials with the Federal Aviation
Administration will investigate the crash, he said. After the crash, searchers from
Taos Search and Rescue and other agencies honed in on
an emergency locator
signal and found the wrecked airplane about
three-quarters of a mile southeast of the airport just before
11 p.m. Steve Andrus, president of Taos Search and Rescue, said Friday he and
fellow searcher Gordon Adams found the wreck. Jesse Osborn, also a member of Taos
Search and Rescue, helped by tracking the signal in another vehicle, Andrus said.
"The plane was crumpled up; he came straight in,"
Andrus said.
Footprints in the snow showed that Rosen had walked
around the plane after the crash, Andrus said. But Rosen was dead at
the scene. "He was in such a state that I was fairly confident in my medical
training that he could not have survived even if we
had got to him
right away," said Andrus, who is certified as a
wilderness first responder. Cope said Rosen was an excellent pilot.
Although he had been instrument-rated for flying in
bad weather, he
seldom did. "He was just a wonderful guy; he was my
best friend," Cope said. "And he took his patients quite
seriously. That's probably the reason he flew up that
night, because he
had patients that he had to see at 8 o'clock the next
morning." Rosen was originally from Cincinnati, Cope said.
Rosen had no family in the Taos area and had never been married, Cope said. "He was
a ski nut, he loved to ski. He also saw patients up at
the Taos Ski Valley,"
Cope said. Rosen had been in Albuquerque because he
had just flown
back from California on a commercial airliner, Cope
said. In addition to seeing patients in Taos County, Rosen had a
medical practice in Los Angeles. Carmen Carrillo, chief investigator with the New
Mexico Board of Medical Examiners, said Friday that Rosen practiced psychiatry in
Taos and was also licensed in California and Ohio. Dan
Page, spokesman for
the UCLA Medical Center in California, said Friday
that Rosen was an
assistant clinical professor of psychiatry and an
associate physician diplomate with UCLA Neuro- Psychiatric Hospital
and Clinics, both part-time, volunteer positions. Page
said Rosen had been
associated with UCLA since 1982. Mark Fratrick,
superintendent of Taos
Municipal Airport, said Rosen owned the white-and-red
Cessna and flew it almost every week. "From what I understand, he
was an experienced pilot," Fratrick said. "He had friends out here," Fratrick
said, speaking of the airport community. Dr. Richard Rosen's Cessna 182 crashed a
mile east of the Taos Municiple Airport. Rosen, an experienced pilot, was flying
from Albuquerque and died in the late-Thursday crash.

In Coffeywille, this truly gifted and dedicated lady committed herself to that of a
caring and compassionate home-maker as she nurtured
her family. In
Coffeyville she made innumerable friends with her
incomparable disposition and generous helping hand - the many with
whom she remained close to up to her very last days along with the many more
from her later homes in Corpus Christie, Albuquerque,
and the Taos area.
This magnificent woman in later years achieved
personal milestones, few imagine or dream about. One such was
her dedicated commitment to pursue and be awarded her Bachelor's Degree in
Nursing at the University of New Mexico at the age of
thirty-nine - all
while ensuring a continuing and beautiful family home
environment. Subsequently,
she was sought out and appointed to the New Mexico
Nursing Association where her many recommendations and
suggestions for the welfare and advancement of the Nursing profession during
the State's Legislature sessions resulted in a number
of significant and
substantive betterments for that cause. In the course
of her nursing commitments,
she served also on the office staff of a number of
prominent Albuquerque physicians and taught classes in the
Nurse's Aide's program. As a very special person in many other ways, she will always
be remembered by loved ones and friends as an incomparable, capable lady who
possessed a very unique flair, few have, in home decor
touches, gourmet food
preparations, and family entertainment ideas. She
loved the Southwest
vistas, culture and it's art with all her intensity
for living, and especially her occasional Old Mexico visits. Mariachi
music was her very favorite and special kind of entertainment, and on her 2007
birthday she was serenaded as a surprise by her family
at her home in
Taos. Annell also enjoyed making so many friends with
her caring ways, especially
those later in the Taos area from the 1960s onward
where the family built several cabins and enjoyed many vacation
times in the Valle Escondido community. Her times there with her youthtful
grandsons, David Chapman, and Andrew Ross of Casper and Ross Clark of Albuquerque,
were treasured ones for her to the very last. Her
loving and
beautiful memory will always be with us. She
personally chose to have no Memorial program upon her passing. Her
family does have plans to host a Remembrance-Celebration-of-Her-Life
at the Valle Escondido Community Club House facility on Saturday, June 28,
2008. Finally, In addition to her immediate family and
grandsons, she is
survived by a brother, Bob Waldrop of Fort Worth,
Texas, and two wonderful
great-granddaughters, Chelsea and Clarisa Chapman of
Casper, Wyoming. She
was 8l years of age. Arrangements made by Rivera
