Sahm, Douglas Wayne
November 23, 1999,
Albuquerque Journal, Page: 4, Douglas Wayne Sahm, 58,
died of arteriosclerotic
cardiovascular disease, said Tim Stepetic, a spokesman
for the OMI here. Sahm,
a main mover in the Tex-Mex supergroup Texas Tornados
and the lead in the Sir Douglas Quintet, was found dead in a Taos
hotel room Thursday. Stepetic said no autopsy was done. He said the
determination of what killed Sahm was based on his
age, symptoms and
history. He said Sahm had been complaining of pain and
had no history of drug
use. Sahm's son authorized shipment of his body back
to his native Texas on Saturday, Stepetic said. Sahm first
became famous in the 1960s with the Sir Douglas Quintet and found a new career
25 years later with Freddy Fender and the Texas Tornados, which had hits with
songs such as "A Little Bit Is Better Than Nada," "Who
Were You Thinking
Of," "She Never Spoke Spanish To Me" and "Hey Baby,
Que Paso?" The
master of many different musical styles from rock,
country and blues to Tex-Mex Douglas Wayne Sahm was born Nov. 6, 1941,
in San Antonio, Texas. He began his recording career as a teen-ager
in 1955 and achieved national fame 10 years later when
the Sir Douglas
Quintet had a hot single with "She's About a Mover."
Last year he sang a verse of Rio De Tenampa on the
Grammy-award- winning "Los Super Seven" CD, which included members of the Texas
Tornados, Los Lobos and other Texas and Hispanic musicians.

Sanchez, Mary Lowe
Mary Lowe Sanchez,
died peacefully, surrounded by her family May 13,
2001, at her home
of 61 years in Taos at the age of 86. Mary had been
suffering from a chronic illness. Her rich life began on July 21,
1914, born in Taos and delivered by Doc Martin. Almost
all of Mary
Eliza's life was spent in Northern New Mexico. Some of
her favorite remembrances
of childhood included panning for gold with her father
at his mine in Red River,
fiestas in Santa Fe and Taos, making miniature adobe
houses while living and going to school on the San Juan Pueblo
and boarding school in Santa Cruz where she excelled in studies but also
loved to play basketball. After college in Nebraska,
Mary decided to
settle in Taos, close to her father to whom she was
devoted. In 1934, she married Joe A. Sanchez and in 1935 gave
birth to her only child, Gene. She was always active in civic organizations.
Mary was appointed Deputy County Clerk in 1936 and she
was the 2nd woman
appointed to the City Council. Mary assumed more
responsibility when
she was named District Court Clerk and Chief Deputy
County Treasurer. She worked as the local board clerk for the
Selective Service until the war ended. In 1946 Mary put her business acumen to
work by opening the successful curio⁄woman's clothing
store called Plaza
Dress and Curio Shop which she ran for 16 years. She
always loved art and
her passion for fine art and was stimulated by her
friendships with the Taos Founders, Fechin, Gaspard, Dole Reed and
many others. She herself was an impressionist painter
who experimented with
abstract expressionism. She studied abroad in Italy
and in Taos with
Emil Bristtram. In 1960, Mary, was approached by
artists Mario Larrinaga and Eric Gibberd to join in a venture to
open an art gallery. Not a passive stockholder, Mary
was the Associate
Director and Secretary of what eventually became known
as Gallery A. Ultimately,
Mary took over the Directorship and ownership of the
gallery and it remains, today, one of New Mexico's most
successful and oldest galleries. Because of her love
for art and her
good eye she became patron and representative to many
fine artists such as her good friend, Gene Kloss. Barbara
Latham, Howard Cook, Kenneth Adams, Elmer Schooley and a host of other
artists were represented by Mary's gallery over the 41
years. She
nurtured the careers of many and also helped countless
clients who began collecting art under her guidance. In 1994 her son,
Gene, took over the administration of Gallery A and Mary continued to work part
time until health issues forced her to retire in
January of 2000.
Generous with her time, energy and charitable
contributions, Mary served on the boards of Holy Cross Hospital
and Millicent Rogers Museum. Over the years Mary's reputation has become virtually
legendary in the arts, a role model known for her boundless energy and dedication
that brought success to every venture she undertook. Mary L. Sanchez has become an
integral part of Taos's history. She will be long remembered and treasured by her
family, her many friends, clients and business associates for her generous
spirit, her loyalty and her enthusiasm for life. She
was preceded in
death by her father, Corydon Capen Lowe, her mother,
Domatila"Tillie" Reed, her brothers, Larkin and Ben and two
sisters, Lucy and Domatila who both died as infants. She is survived by her beloved
husband of 67 years, Joe Arsenio Sanchez; her son, Gene, daughter-in-law, Jules;
three grandsons, Corydan, Benjamin and James; three great-grandchildren, Samantha,
Michael and Jason; nephew, Ben Lowe (Karen) of Albuquerque; niece, Terry Lowe
of California and numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins. Graveside services will
be held on Friday, May 18, 2001 at 12:00 noon at Santa
Fe National Cemetery.
Memorial Reception will be held on Friday, May 18,
2001 at 6:00 p.m.-7:30

Bureau of Business and Economic Research at UNM while also
obtaining a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin. He

of the U.S.
Department of Energy. While at the Department of
Energy, he conducted regional economic impact modeling and
analysis and subsequently international energy modeling and analysis and

At the time he
retired from the Department of Energy in 1995 he was
responsible for the publication of the Department's
International Energy Outlook. Upon his returning to Albuquerque after retiring he
took up the trumpet again. He briefly tried his hand
at mariachi music
and then played two seasons with the New Mexico

Santistevan, Jesus
Mrs.
Colorado Weekly
Chieftain 3-1-1877 Taos, New Mexico On the 6th of this
month, ( 6 Feb 1877)
Jesus Santistevan brutally murdered his wife. He had
been living separated from her and wanted to be divorced so he could
marry another woman. His wife had borne him eight children. On the day of
the murder he skulked into the house and hid in some
part of it and
waited until a convenient opportunity occurred for him
to perpetrate his foul purpose. He shot her then kicked her in a most
brutal manner. She lived for three days after the assault. He escaped and is still
at large. It is said that the sheriff went down to his
mother's house,
where he then was, to arrest him. He was shown the
room in which he was but the sister of the murdered, seeing the
sheriff, shut the door in his face, and he thereupon returned without his man.
Santistevan, Juan
Obituary. Don Juan
Santistevan Following the announcement in our final
edition, at 8:00 in
the morning, Friday, the 21st of August, 1908, there
ceased to exist in his home and after a long illness of many months
duration, Don Juan Santistevan, a genuine personality, known and
appreciated by all. This then is a tribute of
gratitude to his memory.
At the time that he went, he was one of the
Hispanic-Americans that in better times was known as a major
dignitary of his race and of this town, whose name is
still known
nationally and honors the sons of New Mexico and in
particular the valley of Taos, the place of his grand business
enterprises and of his political influence that
constitutes an example
of the political champion of the section of the
country. His life and his biography: Don Juan Santistevan was born in
Truchas, New Mexico, on the 6th day of January 1833, counting the time of his death,
75 years, 7 months, and 16 days. He was the son of
Jose Manuel
Santistevan and Rosalia Medina de Santistevan. In 1840
the family moved from Truchas to Taos, where they had their
residence in the now known place up until today as La Loma, and they acquired the
life of modest carpenters, and much later they
dedicated their
lives to agriculture. Don Jose Manuel Santistevan died
on the 17th day of March 1852, and his spouse Rosalia died in
1879. The life of Don Juan Santistevan deserves extreme merit, when born of a
very humble family and many limited advantages of education, owing to his
activeness, his place in a public position in the
financial world that he built. There 15 or more years he
passed as one of the principal merchants and bankers in the commercial world
of the United States and whose name figured for many years in the commercial
directories of the time, being one of the principal
men of business in
the southwest of the United States. His educational
privileges consisted simply of two terms of attendance in the
public schools of this plaza, but this persistence,
experience and
activity put him in an excellent path of a business
education which he conducted both in the English language and in
Spanish. From the age of 15 years he looked for a
fully independent
life, getting a job as a messenger at the store of
Smithtown, and much later as an employee of the store Wooton
Williams, with whom he remained until the fall of 1852. All of his salary he gave
to his parents with the exception of $200.00, which he
saved, and he bought
a piece of land on this plaza. During the fall of 1852
until the summer
of 1853, he was a sales clerk of Solomon Beuthner and
immediately secured a position in the store of Pedro Joseph,
the same place where the family of the deceased Santistevan live to this day. In
another time, this place was the store and bank of
Juan Santistevan.
His patron, Joseph, died in 1862, the same year Don
Juan Santistevan together
with Kit Carson occupied it for arranging the business
of the state. During the time he was employed in the store of
Joseph, Don Juan saved the sum of $1100, and with that money he started a business
of buying wool and freighting it to St. Louis,
Missouri, which
transactions produced much increase of capital. After,
he entered into business with his friends, Mr. Goodman and Mr.
Freidman, and much later established a business under
the name of
Santistevan, St. Vrain, and Hurst, in which
Santistevan entered with $800.00, St. Vrain $4000.00, and Mr.
Hurst $1000.00. In 1869, the company was dissolved and
the capital
divided. Santistevan continued the business alone from
that date, and in 1881 he made a connection with his business and a
small private bank with capital of $50,000 and his signature. In that time, he
was one of the most financially respected persons in
New Mexico and his
patronage was the most extensive in all of northern
New Mexico. With his financial conditions were also at that
time having excellent credit and besides his business
and bank, and upwards
of 20,000 head of sheep and more and was figured as
the richest man
and most accommodated man in all of northern New
Mexico. In his political life, he was nationally famous in the
Republican Party and he was for many years a guide and
champion of said
Party in this County of Taos, whose word of Don Juan
Santistevan was law.
He was then honored by popular vote of his county into
various political offices. He was probate judge for two consecutive
terms, a county commissioner for one term, the president director of the
schools for two terms, the legislative representative
of New Mexico for
a term, and Senator for another term, and for three
terms took the census of the United States, one in the central
district, and two in the county, and was also the administrator of the mail of
this plaza for 14 consecutive years. In all these
positions he occupied,
he contributed much to the advancement and evolution
not only of the County of Taos but also of the Territory. His
name was of national fame and is permanently engraved in the history of New
Mexico as one of the preferred sons that gave much
honor to the
Mexican race and to this territory for having promoted
the best interests of this community. His wife, Justa Sandoval, was
a native of this valley. She died the 6th of April 1894 and with that date Don Juan
received the greatest disappointment of his life. He lived beside his daughters until
the day of his death. However, perhaps, the sign of
each man has been
designated for each creature by the heavens. Perhaps a
fault in the resolution
of supporting the weight of life, always sad and in
human pain. Perhaps the damned betrayal by other men to a
nurtured and noble spirit that we have inherited as Latins by the sagacious impulse
of a many faceted and strong race like the Saxons when
shown that the
circumstances of nations made our contact with theirs.
Perhaps too much confidence
in the conducing of business, or perhaps a small slip
of will, disposition, or energy in supreme moments in coming up
against the contrasts that the highway of life presents us. This was enough to
ruin forever the fortune, the name, and the influence
with which, after
many long years of assiduous, tenacious and constant
work, could give to Don Juan Santistevan, when here on Jun 2,
1902, he found himself obligated and (it was suggested to him) to assign one
by one his goods and his properties, given the fact
that in a given
moment all of his accounts were presented to him and
he could not in that moment realize or collect the ones owing
to him. In spite of the fact that capital that existed
in goods, property,
livestock, etc., amounted to much more than all he
owed. However, as happens
in such cases, everything went in the turnover of the
estate and, as it is natural, the goods, livestock and properties of
great value were sold at auction to the highest bidder such that in another time
would have constituted a considerable fortune. And yet
from this estate was
paid almost dollar for dollar, and although at a
sacrifice of his own family, his good faith and intention
caused his ruin. It was these business transactions
that the time
competence was shown in the country, and although some
people who do not understand
the interworkings of business and of commercial people
believe that Don Juan Santistevan at that time made a fortune,
it is a completely absurd and the most great falsity that only those who
don¹t understand the substance of business believe.
Don Juan, although
he did not live in his final years in misery or
complete unhappiness living with his daughters and sons-in-law, he
was financially ruined and many times with being able to effectively provide
other than what was necessary. Don Juan upon assigning
his goods labored
with too much good faith and he bowed before the dream
of his influence and
his past triumphs. In other words, in those moments
the spirit that the children of Israel have, all Latins are lacking in.
His funeral. On account of waiting for the arrival of
Don Donaciano Cordova
and the grandchildren of the deceased, the funeral
rights took place
on Monday in the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe,
here, at 9:00 A.M. The body was transported and attended by the
Reverend Padre Jose Giraud, at the house of the deceased and the said parish and
from there to the American Cemetery. At said funeral there manifested high
appreciation and respect that the deceased deserved,
when following the
coffin there were present people from numerous parts
of the country and especially
for here in the center, Ranchos de Taos, Arroyo Seco,
and Arroyo Hondo, which
made day in Taos a day of mourning. In the results of
his marriage, Don Juan Santistevan, had seven daughters and one
son, but one of his daughters, Virginia, the late wife of Don Agapito Martinez,
died some years ago, and his only son died in infancy.
His daughter,
Jacinta, wife of the deceased of Maximiamo Romero,
also died some years ago. Leaving today to cry his sad separation
from this world are his five daughters, those of which are Rafaelita, wife of Don
Manuel Pacheco; Perfecta, Cirila, Margarita, wife of
Don Donaciano
Cordova, and Victoriana, wife of Don Bernabe Gonzales.
Leaving in addition a sister, Dona Cruz Santistevan, and two
brothers, Jesus and Ignacio Santistevan who live on La Loma, and a great number
of granddaughters and sons, great grandchildren and relatives. The deceased received
before his death all the last rites of the Catholic
Church. This small
sketch of one of our better citizens of this valley
and whom we believed a credit to the press of Taos, the only thing left
for us to do is to offer the relatives of the deceased
our sincere phrases
of condolences and with whom "La Revista de Taos"
sympathizes in this
hour of sorrow. La Revista de Taos, 28 Aug 1908.

St. Vrain, Ceran
Santa Fe Daily New
Mexican, Oct 29, 1870 - Col. Ceran St. Vrain - We
received, this morning,
by telegraph, from Fort Union the painful
intelligence, that Col. Ceran St. Vrain, of Mora, departed this life at
six o'clock last night. Col. St. Vrain came to New
Mexico more than
forty years ago, and has been one of her most highly
respected and influential citizens ever since. Possessed of good
education, fine natural abilities, and the highest style of courtesy, and very
great energy and enterprise, he at once engaged in merchandizing and manufacturing,
by the legitimate profits of which he has accumulated
a handsome
property. His upright dealing, fairmindedness, and
courteous treatment of all with whom he came in contact, won him
hosts of friends, who will sincerely sorrow at his death. Every enterprise, looking
to the improvement of the country, received willing
and earnest
support and sympathy from him, and many hundreds of
honest poor men have been by him furnished with the means to
start again, and repair the misfortunes of the past. In every part of the
Territory there are men who will feel that in the
death of Col. St. Vrain
not only has the country lost one of its best
citizens, but they have lost one of their truest and noblest personal
friends. To the friends of the deceased we tender our
sincerest condolence,
and commend his virtues and enterprise to the
immitation of his thousands
of acquaintances in the Territory.

Schuetz, Gottfried
A.
Gottfried A. "Godie"
Schuetz passed away peacefully at his sister Martha's
home in Taos, NM
on June 30, 2008. He was born in Lucerne, Switzerland
on September 27, 1920 to Gottfried A. Schuetz, Sr. and Helena
Schuetz. His mother and sister immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1946, and two years
later he joined and reunited with his family in New
Glarus, WI, where
Gottfried, Sr. owned and operated a cheese factory.
The reunion was a special occasion. Godie's mother and sister,
Martha, also operated a restaurant in New Glarus, WI, where Godie became a helping
hand. During World War II, Godie served as a lieutenant in the Swiss Mountain
Patrol Division. Prior to the war, he attended the University in Zurich,
Switzerland, and Stockholm, Sweden. He studied public
relations, social
studies, and economics. His love for the outdoors led
him to Lake Tahoe, California, where he fulfilled his dream to be a ski
instructor, and then followed his career in Utah, Colorado, and finally in New
Mexico. Ernie Blake, owner of Taos Ski Valley, offered
him the
prestigious position as a ski instructor, which lasted
more that 35 years. Godie owned and operated the famous Casa Cordova
Restaurant for 26 years in Arroyo Seco, NM. He was a perfect host, proud of his
staff, and also gave a helping hand, if needed. He had
a great ability to
entertain people, such as yodeling, singing, and
foremost for telling great stories about fishing and hunting. He had
a great sense of humor. His Swiss tradition never left his heart, he always
loved his old country, especially the likes of music,
food, cheese
fondue, and mountains. In his youthful days, climbing
was also a passion, and he conquered the great Matterhorn several
times. His love for nature took him many wandering hours through the
woods, in search of wild mushrooms so he could share
his finding with
his friends. For the past 10 years, he introduced and
took pride preparing Swiss cheese fondue at the Bavarian Lodge
in Taos Ski Valley, where the cliental enjoyed in partaking with song and
yodeling. Trading Post Cafe and Down Town Bistro in
Taos always
greeted him with open arms, made him feel at home,
conversed with the owners, Renee Mettler and Marco Barbitta, in his
native language. Life for Godie was a happy and fulfilling journey. Godie's
generosity was well known among his friends and
strangers. He was
a member of the Lions Club, and served a short period
of time on the Planning and Zoning Commission of Taos. He was
fortunate to be blessed by God with good health and many friends, always doing what
he wanted and enjoying his family and friends. Godie
is preceded in
death by his parents, Gottfried, Sr. and Helena
Schuetz. He is survived by his sister, Martha Schuetz of Taos, NM;
stepson, Michael Gammon Schuetz, of Albuquerque, NM; granddaughter, Heather
Schuetz of Reno, Nevada; numerous relatives in Switzerland; and loyal and
devoted friends in this country. He will be missed
dearly for his great
smile and twinkling blue eyes and great heart. Funeral

Simson, George
Alexander
George Alexander
Simson, MD, physician, philanthropist, inventor,
beloved husband, father
and grandfather, passed away Saturday December 16,
2006 at Paloma Blanca after a difficult three year battle with
normal pressure hydrocephalus. He is survived by his brother, Jerome of New York
City; his loving partner, Marilyn Tyler with whom he
shared the second
half of his life and whose devoted care made his last
years more comfortable; his son, Mitchell and his wife, Lynn; and
grandchildren, Anna and Philip of Albuquerque New Mexico; daughter, Nina
Dailey of Soap Lake, Washington; son, Jeffrey and
wife, Delia of
Browsboro, Alabama. He was born in New York City on
January 11, 1923 to Eugen and Anna Weinberg Simson. He began
college at Columbia University and then graduated from NYU School of
Medicine in 1946 through an accelerated MD program that was created during World
War II. As a Public Health physician, he was then sent
to care for
prisoners in the Federal Penitentiary in Terre Haute,
Indiana. He used to joke that sometime he was going to write a book
titled "Some of My Best Friends are Numbers." In the summer of 1952 he drove his
wife, Helene, and 9-month-old son across the country
in a Rambler
station wagon to Albuquerque where he began work in
the Indian Health Service,
"making rounds" at the nearby pueblos and reading
thousands of chest x-rays taken for TB screening. He and his wife
fell in love with the spectacular sunsets and tumbleweeds and decided to stay.
He began a private practice and, with several other physicians, created a
condominium association and built the Encino Medical
Plaza where he
worked until his retirement in 1981. He was a "chest
physician" and treated lung and heart problems prior to the development
of pulmonary and cardiac subspecialties. He built an arterial blood gas analyzer
in his office and used it to aid in the treatment of
patients long
before such machines appeared in hospital
laboratories. He built an electrical acupuncture device and a
phonocardiogram and used these in his office for
diagnosis and treatment
as well. During his wood working phase he made
children's trucks and cradles for Toys for Tots at Christmas. After
retirement his close friend Fred Hanold taught him how to work in metal and they
made miniature steam engines while filling his
workshop with
cigar smoke. He tried his hand at rebuilding a Triumph
Stag but was unable to complete this project that will be
finished by his grandson. He collaborated with the
late artist
Raymond Jonson on several stained glass windows. The
largest piece, which is about eight feet tall, was donated to St.
Joseph Hospital and graced the chapel there for many years. The family recalls
his marathon summer chess matches with Dr. George Ross, tennis matches with Dr.
Bob Klebanoff, and spectacular crashes skiing down
Snake Dance and
Longhorn at Taos. At age 63 he learned to windsurf
while traveling in Austria and continued at Cochiti Lake. He created
two memorial funds: the Helene W. Simson Memorial Fund at the UNM School
of Law and the Helene W. Simson Memorial Opera Fund at the UNM College of Fine
Arts. The family wishes publicly to thank Angie
Montano for her
decades of love and devotion to Doctor George. We also
wish to thank the staff of Paloma Blanca who were exceptional in
their professional care and support during his stay there. He is remembered as
a gifted physician, for his inveterate tinkering and creating, his mischievous sense
of humor, his generosity and mentorship, his
opinionated stubbornness,
and his love for fine art, music, travel and food.
Memorial services to be announced later. In lieu of flowers, the
family requests that you make donations in his name to your favorite
charity. ABQ Journal December 27, 2006
