Antonio Vigil

Census records of New Mexico list José Gabriel Vigil born circa 1822 in Santa Ana Co but, in some other references, Santa Ana Mission. Per Abiquiu baptisms 1754-1866, José Gabriel's parents were listed as Antonio Vigil, born circa 1791 and María Manuela Girón (Jirón) born circa 1790 (ref LDS). The latter couple were married circa 1820 (ref LDS) in Abiquiu, New Mexico and likely remained in this area. Their son José Gabriel Vigil was born 1 Sep 1822 in Ojo Caliente and was baptized on 8 Sep 1822 at the Santo Tomás Catholic Church in Abiquiu.

The children of José Gabriel Vigil and María Isabel Lucero began with Manuel Antonio Vigil born in Ojo Caliente on 31 Dec 1843 and baptized on 6 Jan 1844 in Abiquiu (ref baptisms of Abiquiu). María Feliciana Vigil was baptized on 6 Apr 1848 at Ojo Caliente followed by the birth of María Tomasa Vigil circa 1849. The 1850 census lists José Gabriel as a resident of Rio Arriba, New Mexico. The next child was María Dorotea who was born in Ancones and christened on 6 Feb 1853 in Abiquiu.

By this time José Gabriel was in search of a new residence. Another daughter, Maria Antonia Vigil was christened on 29 Sep 1855 at the Nuestra Señora de Dolores Church at Arroyo Hondo followed by Donaciano Vigil born on 23 Mar 1859 and baptized on 22 at the same church. (He was later christened on 22 Feb 1863 in Antonito, Colorado).

José Gabriel Vigil migrated and settled in Antonito during the early 1860s. A son José Juan Climaco Vigil was born on 3 Apr 1862 in Antonito, Conejos County and a daughter María Luisa Vigil was born on 17 Jun 1865. (Refs St. Augustine Catholic Church).

José Gabriel was listed in the 1860 Colorado Territory census and voted in the 1861 Colorado Territorial election of the Conejos District. His oldest son, Manuel Antonio Vigil married María del Carmen Gonzales on 25 Dec 1861 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Conejos. Their children resulted in José Erineo (baptized on 3 Jul 1864), María del Rosario Vigil (baptized on 26 Dec 1866), María Manuela Vigil (baptized on 6 Nov 1868), Cristóbal Vigil (baptized on 10 Jul 1871) and José Tomás Vigil, born on 6 Mar 1873 (baptized on 9 Mar 1973) all at Our Lady of Sorrow Church.

As pioneer families of the San Luis Valley, three daughters of José Gabriel Vigil and María Isabel elected spouses. María Dorotea married Juan de Jesús Valdez on 24 Feb 1867. María Tomasa married Bartolomé Lucero on 29 Jun 1867 and Maria Feliciana married José Damian Chacón on 7 Oct 1867. All these marriages were performed at the St. Augustine Catholic Church in Antonito, Conejos, Colorado Territory.
